Reducing the Risks of Osteoporosis
According
to statistics, around 68 percent are women suffering from osteoporosis
out of the 44 million afflicted with the condition. How can we describe
this disease? Our bones become thin and lose its density. It may strike
anyone. However, proper diet and exercise can help prevent it. One way
of preventing osteoporosis is to avoid drinking sodas. Drinking large
amounts of soda is said to decrease bone density as found out by recent
studies.
A wide cross-section of the population is affected by this bone disease called osteoporosis. For this reason, bone-strengthening drugs like Fosamax are among the list of best selling drugs in the US. Since side effects can always happen and we always want to protect our bones, consequences should just be faced bravely.
Through taking a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, osteoporosis can be prevented. Low-fat and soy milk, cheese, cereals and yogurt are foods that have a rich source of calcium. The required 40% daily calcium need can be achieved by taking in an eight ounce of low-fat yogurt.
Lactase-deficient patients, or those who are lactose intolerant, can get amounts of calcium from canned goods (with bones) like sardines and salmon, broccoli and spinach. One-third of one’s daily calcium need can already be achieved by eating three ounces of sardines (canned in oil). Drinking orange juice fortified with calcium can be a substitute for people who experience cramps from milk.
Vitamin D requirement can easily be achieved by a tablespoon of fish liver oil. Consuming the flesh of fatty fish equivalent to even three ounces of cooked salmon has ample amount of vitamin D to meet your needs. A 30-minute, five-times exposure to sun between 10 AM and 3 PM twice a week is even enough.
A higher chance of suffering from osteoporosis is seen among people with a sedentary lifestyle. Being energetic is always advisable. In keeping the bone healthy, mobility is a necessity. Regular exercise, especially weight-bearing ones such as walking or hiking, is important.
People with osteoporosis can always been advised with Fosamax in order for it to be prevented. A Fosamax lawsuit is currently being filed by many people which can have a big impact on the number of Fosamax prescriptions. So, whenever we use any kind of medical drug, we should be aware of its possible side effects.
